Local Folk/Acoustic Venues Westcott Community Center. Home of a monthly folk/acoustic series co-produced by the Folkus Project. This church, on Syracuse's east side, has a long tradition of hosting inventive programming. Now a twice-monthly acoustic music series, booked through the Folkus Project, is part of the tradition.
Kirkland Art Center . . . right on the square in beautiful Clinton, N.Y. This is one of the venerable and classiest of the long-time local acoustic venues. Great acoustics, and a top-notch line-up. Plus -- go figure! -- they finally got them a website. The Center for the Arts of Homer has put together an impressive line-up of upcoming acts, many in singer-songwriter vein. Get all the info at www.center4art.org. Or call them at 607.749.4900 or 877.749.ARTS (toll free). Kellish Farms (now known also as Rolling Hills of Bluegrass Americana. On their farm just off Route 20, east of Lafayette, these folks have begun hosting jams, a bluegrass festival, and a new folk festival. 6 on the Square. Located in the former location of the Night Eagle, in charming Oxford, N.Y., this new venue is starting to book a variety of acts, including many folk/acoustic and that ilk. In Ithaca, Juna's Cafe, on the commons in Ithaca, has a lot of cool stuff going on. (Watch out, though: the place is crawling with young people!) Meanwhile, ABC Cafe, up in Collegetown, is a long-time bastion of all that is groovy and funky. Over at the University, the Cornell Folk Song Club always has things going on. And then there's Bound for Glory, the legendary weekly live radio show held in the cafe at Anabel Taylor. Jericho Arts Center is in Bainbridge, N.Y. (between Oneonta and Binghamton). They are currently holding monthly jams and plan to also host folk/acoustic shows. Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs is legendary -- not quite Central New York, but a folk mecca still. And there's Old Songs, which presents not only the famous festival, but some other musical programming. Night Eagle Cafe is an amazing little venue recently moved to Binghamton, which books some of the very best contemporary folk and singer-songwriter types.
In Rochester, the old 12 Corners Coffeehouse is officially gone, but Golden Link is hosting some shows at that venue. (Their site also includes a Rochester area calendar.) Plus, there is this list of Rochester's many, many coffeehouses.
